Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why was Holy Cross Academy founded?

A. Holy Cross was founded in 1996 to fulfill a need for Catholic education in an area that currently does not have a Diocesan school.  We are responding to the Pope John Paul II's call for a new evangelization, a task which begins with education.  A complete education is offered, illuminated by the teachings of the Church. The school is faithful to the Church, the Councils and the Magisterium.  We love and support our priests and bishops.

Q. What grades does Holy Cross Academy serve?

A. Holy Cross is a complete junior-senior high school serving grades 7-12.  St. Patrick's in Oneida offers K-6.

Q. Where is the school located?

A. HCA owns a beautiful facility located at 4020 Barrington Road, Oneida, just off Route 365 one block north of 365A.  The school is within the Oneida school district.

Q.  Does HCA offer NYS Regents Diplomas?

A.  Yes.  Holy Cross is qualified by the NYS Board of Regents to administer the regents exams at our facilities and to confer Regents diplomas.

Q. We do not live in the Oneida school district. Is busing available?

A. If you live within 15 miles of the school, or if there is at least one student already being bused from your district, your home school district must provide busing. The busing application deadline is March 25 (in some cases, you may have more time). Please apply for busing even if undecided about enrollment.

Q. Do students have to be Catholic?

A. No, but all students, Catholic and non-Catholic, must participate in religion classes, field trips, and religious activities (non-Catholics may not receive communion). A passing grade in religion is required for graduation.

Q.
Is Holy Cross a Diocesan school?

A. Although the school is loyal to the Magisterium and has the Bishop's blessing, Holy Cross remains administratively independent. A Board of Catholic laity oversees operations and spiritual guidance is provided by local priests.

Q.
Is tuition high?

A. No. Tuition for 2008-2009 is $2,700 per student which is nearly half the cost of a Diocesan school.  The maximum family tuition is just $4,050 per year. Tuition may be paid all at once, in two payments, or in ten monthly payments.

Q.
How does the school meet its expenses?

A. Tuition covers roughly 1/3 of the cost of educating each student. Many individual donors have generously supported the school. Families and friends help reduce costs by volunteering.  Several fundraising events are planned throughout the year and grants from foundations are also being pursued.

Q. What about Phys. Ed. and sports?

A. Some classes are held at the Armory in Oneida and some on campus.  Sports teams include soccer, basketball and tennis with plans underway for volleyball and golf.  Other activities are planned including bowling, cross-country skiing and many outdoor activities on the 15 acre campus.
